McFadden’s Campaign focuses on balancing growth with community spirit

Longtime councillor Tara McFadden is seeking re-election, pledging to balance the town’s rapid growth with the “small-town feel” Cochranites treasure.
McFadden was one of five candidates officially added to the candidates’ list today for the Oct. 20 municipal election.
A Cochrane resident for 22 years, McFadden says she wants to continue focusing on making life more affordable and accessible for residents. She has long advocated for improved public engagement, as well as expanded parks and recreation spaces.
“Cochrane is more than a beautiful place to live, it’s a town built on trust, kindness and neighbours looking out for one another,” McFadden said. “The culture of Cochrane is neighbourliness, kindness, inclusion … there’s equity, equality and respect.”
She points to growth-related challenges, such as traffic, housing and infrastructure, as key areas where careful planning is needed. Her campaign priorities include:
- Managed growth that integrates parks, recreation areas and services into new neighbourhoods.
- Accessible community spaces, including fields, playgrounds, libraries and gathering areas.
- Support for attainable housing and more efficient transportation.
- Stronger connections between council and residents through open dialogue and consultation.
“Some of the best ideas come from the street; they don’t come in council chambers,” McFadden said. “We cannot make good decisions without listening to folks.”
McFadden has served on town council for 18 years and has been active in community initiatives since moving to Cochrane.
Candidates’ list continues to grow
It’s a tradition on the Labour Day long weekend for the number of candidates stepping forward for municipal council to increase, and this year is no different.
Today alone, four other candidates officially registered, including Cole Sunderman, Scott Shannon, and Subine Spears. Incumbent Alex Reed also put his name forward for a third term.
With nominations continuing until 12 noon on Sept. 22, there are now 10 candidates seeking town council seats and three running for mayor.
